It’s Fridays in the graveyard. I love a graveyard, don’t you?
This week, in Episode 10 of Fridays in the Graveyard, Mindie Burgoyne talks about the grave of Captain William Carhart. We are in the residential neighborhood of Captain’s Hill in West Ocean City, Maryland.
Captain William Carhart, from Philadelphia, was the captain of The Hawk, a schooner that was used for transporting goods between the Caribbean and eastern USA ports. The Hawk left Cuba, filled with sugar and other exports on Christmas day in 1798, bound for Philadelphia.
On January 5, 1799 - 11 days after leaving Cuba, The Hawk sank oof the coast of Ocean City, Maryland. All was lost - the ship, the crew and Captain Carhart.
No one knows who brought his body to this place over a mile inland from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, and no one knows if Captain Carhart is the only one buried in this grave.
This grave is the only marked grave in all of Ocean City.
