Women have served in every American war effort. During World War I, American women were nurses and typists. They also were radio operators. But during World War II, some women became drivers and pilots. Many women died serving their country. However, women did not fight on the front lines. For years, women were banned from combat roles. In 2003, the United States went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Religious custom prevented local women from talking to male soldiers. So the Army recruited female soldiers. Their job was to engage with Iraqi and Afghan women. But the female soldiers were armed. And they were ready to fight. By 2013, 15 percent of American soldiers were women. In Afghanistan and Iraq, 280,000 of the soldiers had been women. Female soldiers had proven their capabilities. So, the US government made it official. The ban against women in combat was lifted.
