Seven months after the assassination of prominent Oromo politician Battee Urgessa, his family has arrived in the U.S., expressing gratitude for the global support they've received in the wake of his tragic death.
Battee, 42, a senior member of the opposition Oromo Liberation Front (#OLF) and outspoken advocate for justice in Ethiopia, was assassinated in April 2024.
In a message to Addis Standard, his family said “his violent death silenced an emerging leader with a strong and persuasive dissenting voice.”
Despite calls for accountability, and a preliminary finding by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) implicating government security forces, investigations into the killing remains incomplete.
Now in exile, his wife Sintayehu Waji, is confronted with raising their five children, including a baby born just months after Batte was killed, away from their home.
