Description of Operations on Polynomial Functions
Operations on polynomial functions include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
1. Addition: To add two polynomials, combine like terms by summing their coefficients. For example, (2x² + 3x + 1) + (x² + 4) = 3x² + 3x + 5 .
2. Subtraction: Subtraction involves subtracting the coefficients of like terms. For example, (3x² + 5) - (x² + 2) = 2x² + 3 .
3. Multiplication: To multiply polynomials, use the distributive property (also known as the FOIL method for binomials) to multiply each term in one polynomial by each term in the other. For example, (x + 2)(x + 3) = x² + 5x + 6 .
4. Division: Polynomial long division or synthetic division can be used to divide one polynomial by another. The goal is to express the dividend as a product of the divisor and a quotient, plus a remainder.
These operations allow for the manipulation and simplification of polynomial expressions, which is essential in algebra and calculus.
