What are the pros & cons of Vivitrol in treating addiction? Vivitrol is a non-addiction opioid antagonist that works to prevent a relapse back to opioid and/or alcohol use after detox. Vivitrol is proven to decrease cravings. Vivitrol is an extended-release shot version of naltrexone. Vivitrol does not contain opiates like suboxone. Vivitrol does block chemical responses so the user cannot get high. Vivitrol is only available by prescription and must be given by a medical provider. To be eligible to receive Vivitrol, you must detox prior to taking it. The Vivitrol shot lasts for 28 days and needs to be repeated monthly for a total of 12 months. Some side effects of Vivitrol are injection site tenderness, fatigue, decreased appetite, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps, joint pain, headaches and/or dizziness. The side effects for Vivitrol will only last a few days if any are present - many users have none. It is possible to still feel the effects of alcohol while using Vivitrol, which is why it is not recommended to use. Vivitrol should only be taken with an expert, which is why at Northpoint Recovery we strive to provide you with a safe and therapeutic environment.
