Here is the complete story of the Children of Ste Justine, presented December 17th, on the Fitfh Estate.
This is the story of a cancer clinical trial gone awry: from the outset, with an ill-designed protocol; to the end, where very sick young patients were housed in a dangerous environment.
At Sainte-Justine Hospital -- one of the most important pediatric centres in Canada -- researchers had been testing a last-chance treatment for children with terminal cancer. But they cut corners and failed to follow the study's protocol. Health Canada had to step in and urgently shut the study down.
For the young patients, what were the consequences? What were families promised? What scientific principles were ignored? Above all, who failed to fulfill their monitoring duty?
