Barnevave Southern Loop – Carlingford Walk
Starting Point:
Begin in the centre of Carlingford, a picturesque medieval village on the Cooley Peninsula.
The route gradually ascends through the narrow streets and historic heart of the town.
The Ascent:
The walk follows a gentle uphill path, suitable for most fitness levels.
The trail is well laid out, with clear signage and solid footing.
As you climb, enjoy views back over Carlingford Lough and across to the Mourne Mountains.
The Famine Village:
Midway up, you’ll reach the Famine Village, a poignant reminder of Ireland’s history.
From here, you can spot Queen Maeve’s Gap, said in Irish folklore to be the place where Queen Medb (Maeve) retreated with her armies during her legendary campaigns.
The Summit:
Continue to the summit of Barnavave (Barnevave), marked by a wooden cross.
The name “Barnavave” derives from Bearna Mhéabha – “Maeve’s Gap,” linking the site to the myth.
Panoramic views extend across Carlingford Lough, the Cooley Peninsula, and out to Slieve Foy.
The Descent:
The return route is a steady downhill path, offering sweeping views of Slieve Foy, the highest peak in the Cooley Mountains at 589 metres above sea level.
The loop brings you back down into Carlingford village, where you can explore cafés, pubs, and heritage sites such as King John’s Castle.
