We continue our discussion of Lacan's thesis, noting Jacques-Alain Miller's thoughts on the early Lacan. Via reference to Darian Leader's 'What is Madness?' we underscore the crucial distinction between paranoid states, which occur in all subjective structures, and paranoia "as a distinct diagnostic category involving the construction of a stable system of beliefs with a named persecutor" (Leader, 2011, p. 20). We go on to provide further details of Lacan's case of Marguerite Anzieu, quoting from Lacan's account of her life circumstances. Once again, Olga Cox-Cameron's paper 'Lacan's Doctoral Thesis' (2000) is a crucial resource. The translation of sections from Lacan's thesis are to be found in a (1986) book entitled 'The Clinical Roots of the Schizophrenia Concept' (edited by Cutting and Shepherd).
