This video shows the current train fleet (August 2025) along with the planned future rolling stock and past rolling stock for this operator.
The Chiltern train fleet is currently in the process planning a new trains order to replace the older Networker units operated by Chiltern which will likely be battery electric trains.
Chiltern currently operate 3 main classes of trains which include the class 165 Networker Turbo units which are in 2 and 3 carriage formations and operate local and regional services across most of the Chiltern network, these are the oldest Chiltern units and feature 2+3 seating which will likely be replaced from around 2030 onwards.
Class 168 Clubman/Turbostar form Mainline services and all feature 2+2 seating throughout which along with the 165 are standard class only. These units are formed of 2, 3 and 4 carriages but often operate in multiple in up to 8 carriage formations. The class 168 are currently being fully refurbished.
Loco hauled Mark 3 carriages are used alongside class 68 locomotives with Driving Van Trailers on some Mainline Silver Birmingham to London services including those from Stourbridge. These are usually in 6 carriage formations with 5 standard class carriages (2+2) and 1 Business Zone carriage (2+1 seating) which is currently declassified on all services. These sets are being replaced from spring 2026.
From late 2025 Chiltern will be operating 2 carriage class 196 CAF Civity traisn moved across from West Midlands Railway which will be rebranded in Chiltern colours and will be for East West Rail from Milton Keynes to Oxford via Winslow once this new railway line reopens.
From spring 2026 Chiltern will be operating 13 Mark 5A carriage ( ex TransPennine Express Nova 3) sets on most Birmingham to London services which will operate with class 68 locomotives, 1 First Class carriage, 3 standard class carriages and 1 standard class driving trailer allowing for 5 carriage trains on this route. These will reintroduce first class to Chiltern and will replace the older Mark 3 carriages.
Chiltern have previously operated class 121 single carriage bubble car/railcar units, class 172 Turbostar (move to West Midlands Trains), class 67 locomotives with Mark 3 carriages and an additional Mark 3 rake of carriages.
The train fleet information is correct as possible as of August 2025 and future train fleet dates are based for the planned introduction for passenger services. Details of new Battery Hybrid trains have not yet been confirmed. Past Train Fleet is based on when the current Chiltern franchise format has been in operation since 1996, this includes all of Chiltern Railways since it was privatised and operated by Arriva.
