India–China Restart Border Trade via Lipulekh Pass | Nepal Objects | Anjali
The India-China border trade through Lipulekh Pass has been officially resumed after years of suspension, marking a significant development in the region’s geopolitical and economic landscape. However, this decision has triggered a strong protest from Nepal, which claims that the Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura areas fall under its territory as per its revised political map released in 2020.
What Happened?
India and China recently agreed to reopen the trade routes via Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand), Shipki La (Himachal Pradesh), and Nathu La (Sikkim). These routes were historically used for cross-border trade and pilgrimages since the 1954 India-China Trade Agreement, also known as the Panchsheel Agreement. The routes were closed after the 1962 Sino-India War and partially reopened later for trade and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Nepal’s Objection
Nepal has strongly objected to this move, citing its territorial claims over the Lipulekh region. Kathmandu argues that India and China are ignoring Nepal’s concerns and conducting agreements over disputed territory without Nepal’s involvement.
India’s Response
India has firmly rejected Nepal’s objection, stating that:
The Lipulekh trade route has been operational since 1954, and the recent agreement is a continuation of the same historical practice.
