上海と湖州を結ぶ滬蘇湖高速鉄道の開通により上海からのアクセスが格段に向上した湖州を訪れました。初めて中国を統一した秦が滅亡した紀元前3世紀末、その後の覇権を争った西楚と漢。その時代を小説にした司馬遼太郎の「項羽と劉邦」が有名ですが、敗者である項羽が挙兵した場所がここ湖州です。項羽がまだチンピラ風情で湖州 (かつての烏程県)に隠遁していた頃、全国巡遊でここを訪れた始皇帝を目にしたという説話があります。秦滅亡後、項羽は楚の残党を集め挙兵したのが、ここ湖州の項王城、その後の湖州城です。歴史にもしもはありませんが、もし武勇に優れた項羽が勝者になっていたら中国の歴史はどうなっていたのだろうと考えながら、歴史文化街区である小西街、衣裳街などを散策ました。

Legend has it that while Xiang Yu was still a thug living in seclusion in Huzhou (formerly Wucheng County), he spotted Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who was visiting the city on a national tour. After the fall of the Qin Dynasty, Xiang Yu gathered the remnants of Chu and raised his army here in Huzhou, from Xiang King Castle, later known as Huzhou Castle. While history offers no "what ifs," I wondered what Chinese history would have been like if the prodigious Xiang Yu had emerged victorious. I strolled through the historical and cultural districts of Xiaoxi Street and the Costume Street, pondering what would have happened if the heroic Xiang Yu had emerged victorious.
