Born in Glasgow but raised in Surrey Chas McDevitt along with Lonnie Donegan and The Vipers were the big 3 of U K skiffle groups .
Skiffle was very popular in 1956 / 57 in UK and was fore runner to R & R .
This song Freight Train was written by an American Elizabeth Cotten when she was 11 years old in 1904 ,She based on freight trains running near her home .It`s a story about a wanted criminal on the run .
Chas and his group appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show singing this song but had in USA the smaller hit at No 40 on Billboard where Rusty Draper got it to No 6 .
However in UK the record charted at No 5 in April 1957 .On the record Nancy Whiskey a Glasgow folk singer did the vocals . Chas McDevitt does the whistling .Nancy died in 2003 but Chas lives on and still performs.
