👉 In the Volcano National Park area, Keauhou refers to:
🌋 Keauhou Landing / Keauhou Trail / Keauhou Shelter (Puna Coast)
Located along the remote southern coastline of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
Historically, this was a fishing village and canoe landing site.
You can reach it via the Keauhou Trail, which descends through old lava flows to the rugged coast.
It’s not accessible by car — you have to hike in (usually 3–4 miles one way, depending on the trailhead).
There’s a three-sided backcountry shelter (Keauhou Shelter) that hikers sometimes use for camping with a permit.
This area is rich in archeological sites: ancient house platforms, trails, and petroglyphs can be found near the shore.
The name Keauhou here also means “the new current,” which fits the coastal location.
⚠️ Important:
The Keauhou site in the park is very remote, with no services, cell coverage, or water.
Weather and trail conditions can change quickly because it’s exposed lava terrain and coastline.
You need a backcountry permit if you plan to stay overnight.
