Blackhall Mill in Gateshead, County Durham, UK, has a history that includes a steel forge, paper mill, and coal mining:
Steel forge: The Bertram family operated a steel forge at Blackhall Mill from the early 1700s. The steel made at Blackhall Mill was considered some of the best in England. The forge was powered by a dam across the Derwent River.
Paper mill: A paper mill was also operated by the mill race that powered the forge. Swedish engineers visited the paper mill in 1719 and 1754.
Coal mining: Coal mining took place at the Tongue Burns Drift.
Settlement: Blackhall Mill was first shown on a map of County Durham in 1768. By 1895, the settlement had expanded to include a school, chapel, and other buildings.
