Hi everyone, in this video I'm talking chord substitutions. For this example, we'll be replacing certain chords in a sequence with others that share some notes with the chords we're replacing but also some notes which are not diatonic, thus creating more harmonic interest to our chord sequence. This is a great method for transforming more predictable or uninspiring sounding chord sequences and can really make you look like you have a strong command of harmony!
The chord substitutions I'm using in this example work like so (notice the shared notes between the chords and notice the non-diatonic notes in the substitutions):
Original chord F ➡️ F, A, C
Substitute to Bmaj9 ➡️ Bb, D, F, A, C
Original chord Fm ➡️ F, Ab, C
Substitute to Dbmaj7 ➡️ Db, F, Ab, C
We see when we put my example chord sequence into the key of F that we can do really nice close voicings of our Gm7 to Gbmaj7, whereby in both chords we keep the Bb and F notes where they are, and the other 2 notes drop by a semitone, like so:
Gm7 Gbmaj7
G ➡️ Gb
Bb ➡️ Bb
D ➡️ Db
F ➡️ F
I hope you like the sound of these chord substitutions! If you have any questions please leave a comment and I'll be happy to help
