MEETING A HERO! My First Drive in a MCLAREN F1

Never in my life did I think I might have the opportunity to drive the icon that is a McLaren F1, but that dream has become reality! Thanks to the Selected Car Collection, you join me to experience chassis 11R, an F1 GTR that not only raced at Le Mans but has the most amazing story. Just, wow!

It's often said that you shouldn't meet your heroes because they will surely disappoint, but today we're in Denmark to see if that's really true, or if my suspicions that this is going to be every bit the experience I've being dreaming about for many years. Having visited the Selected Car Group previously and taken in the amazing array of cars in the Collection, alongside the other elements of the business, it is now time to go for the drive of my life.

The McLaren F1 needs very little introduction; for any child in the 90s it was the halo car in every game, it broke records in terms of top speed and the story racing at the Le Mans 24h in 1995. This particular car goes even further, chassis 11R was original raced in the 1996 season before being acquired by Mercedes-Benz to use as the development mule for their upcoming CLK GTR. While the prototype set lap times 2 seconds faster at Jarama, it was unfortunately damaged and then returned to McLaren to be rebuilt into GTR spec, and in 2002 converted by the factory for road use.

It's one of only 106 cars in total, of which 28 are the GTRs, 18 of those are the short body variants. Displayed in historic orange paintwork, the details are incredible; a 6.1l BMW NA V12, central seating position, weight of only 940kg, and a feeling unlike any other. Values have flown through the roof in recent years with the desirability of such cars, and this specific car is about as good as it gets.

I cannot thank to owner and entire team at the Selected Car Group for this unbelievable opportunity, words cannot really describe how special this has been - these things don't come along every day, and arguably it is the greatest moment of my entire 'YouTube career'.
