From the moment Roman rule collapsed in the early 5th century, Britain did not fall silent. Instead, it fractured into dozens of competing kingdoms, many of which have vanished from popular history. This documentary tells the ENTIRE story of Britain’s lost kingdoms and the world that existed before England, Scotland, or Wales took shape.
We follow Britain from the withdrawal of Rome around 410 AD into the centuries that followed, when Brittonic and early Anglo-Saxon kingdoms emerged across the island. From Dumnonia in the west and Rheged in the north to Elmet, Gododdin, Strathclyde, and the rising powers of Mercia and Northumbria, we trace how local rulers, warbands, and surviving Roman elites carved out new political worlds.
Drawing on archaeology, early texts, and landscape evidence, this film explores how warfare, trade, religion, and geography shaped the Dark Ages of Britain. Long before modern nations existed, these forgotten kingdoms laid the foundations of Britain’s languages, borders, and identities.
