• Sun-soaked Wonders: Lanzarote & Fuertevent...
The island is a myth! Even those who have never been to Cuba have images in their heads: street cruisers with patina, imposing old buildings, white palm-lined beaches, lovers on the Malecón waterfront in front of crashing waves, and people who radiate a special joie de vivre. "mareTV" explores the west of the island between Trinidad and the capital Havana.
From there, a legendary train departs for Matanzas: the Hershey Train. It takes its name from the Hershey Chocolate Corporation, which operated a large sugar mill here in the 1920s and had to transport the important raw material to the capital. Today, a pink railcar that is almost 100 years old still plods along. When it is running. After a long break due to technical problems, the big test run is now to take place. Even representatives of the Ministry of Transport are present, but fortunately also the resourceful mechanics, because they have to get back to work after just a few hundred meters.
Lifeguards at the Varadero
The salvavidas of Varadero, probably the most famous beach on the island, have a particularly nice place to work. But lifeguard Idarys Torres Sanchez must always be wide awake, because huge breakers often roll onto the snow-white sand. Then it can quickly become dangerous for the bathers. And the lifeguards' territory extends over 20 kilometers.
The Venice of Cuba
In the idyllic seaside village of Isabela de Sagua, the stilt houses fill up in the evening; sitting above the water, the fish tastes especially good. The place is also called the "Venice of Cuba". At the Miramar restaurant, Manuel Rodríguez Pérez serves his famous fish nuggets. To make the breadcrumbs, he and his nephew Boris made a machine out of bicycle parts, an old electric motor and a discarded meat grinder, which conjures up the breadcrumbs from bread.
Ingenious Caribbean solutions
The former colonial city of Trinidad on the south coast of Cuba is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean. Here, the houses are particularly colorful. At the Plaza Mayor, the neo-baroque main square, one magnificent building follows the next. A little further west is the Bay of Pigs, world famous for the failed 1961 invasion by Cuban exiles. Today, fishermen fish at this historic site with inflated condoms. To these they attach their lines, for floats and poses are scarce. "Ningun problema," in Cuba people almost always find a Caribbean ingenious solution.
