I suppose that a random survey of people would conclude that the Bible presents women in a less than equal position to men. In fact, many individuals believe that the Bible is a sexist document and is archaic. Frequently, I hear people say that we are living in a modern society, therefore we should not base our views and practices on a book that is more than 2,000 years old. We are indeed living in modern times and in a society that is far removed from Scriptural truth. A very important question that needs to be asked is, “Is the state of women improving because of our progressive condition?” The answer is a resounding no! Women are suffering greatly in our modern world which tolerates the gross oppression of women.

With the expansion of Islam (Sharia based and other more moderate expressions), women are denied many basic human rights and treated as significantly less than their male counterparts. When one looks outside of Islam, the problem of women trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation is also most disturbing. Rap music and other expressions of the entertainment industry frequently present women in a most demeaning manner. In other words, those who rush to criticize the Scriptures as sexist, may want to take a closer look at various societies throughout the world and speak out against the shocking brutality and discrimination that women suffer in many places.

The purpose of such statements is not an attempt to point to other expressions of sexism and make relative the perceived sexism in the Bible; rather it is to inform the reader that despite our modern society and the increasing tendency to reject the Scripture, the plight of women today is dire and digressing. The question that this article will address is whether the Bible (Old and New Testaments) contributes to this highly serious problem or is the Bible a voice that actually lifts women from their oppression to the place of equality with full rights and privileges?

In the very first chapter of the Bible, one reads that G-d created man. What is important to realize is that the word which is translated man, actually refers in this first chapter to both male and female.

וַיִּבְרָא אֱלֹהִים אֶת-הָאָדָם בְּצַלְמוֹ, בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים בָּרָא אֹתוֹ: זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה, בָּרָא אֹתָם.

And G-d created the man in His image, in the image of G-d He created him, male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27

From this verse, it should be understood that there is an equality between male and fe-male; however, this equality does not mean that men and women have the same calling from G-d, nor the same role to perform. In the second chapter of Genesis, one reads the creation account from a different vantage point. This account is more specific and de-tailed than what appears in chapter 1. This perspective does not reveal a different creation, but only a different view of the same creation. Although one learned in Genesis 1 that G-d created both male and female, in Genesis 2 it is clear that G-d created man first and the woman was created from the man. Paul teaches that there is a significance in the fact that man was created first (see 1 Timothy 2:13) and that it was not the man who was deceived by Satan, but the woman (see 1 Timothy 2:14). Before speaking about the implications of these two facts, it is required that one remembers that the woman was created to be a עֵזֶר helper to man (see Genesis 2:18).
