If you just want to improvise using the minor pentatonic or your blues scales, use the scale that corresponds to the minor 7th chord of your instrument I.e. Cm7 to F7 would require a C minor pentatonic or blues scale.
Over the minor 7 chord I am using the Dorian mode. The Dorian mode is simply a major scale but starting on the 2nd degree of the scale. For example, if you were to play G major:
GABCDEF# G
The Dorian scale would be:
ABCDEF# GA
So, when you see the minor 7th chord (for your instrument) simply work out which major scale that note would be the 2nd degree of.
Over the dominant 7th chord I am playing the The mixolydian mode, which is simply a major scale but starting on the 5th degree of the scale. For example, if you were to play G major:
GABCDEF# G
The Mixolydian scale would be:
DEF# GABCD
So, when you see the Dominant 7th chord (for your instrument) simply work out which major scale that note would be the 5th degree of.
