Ferdinand Cheval, son of a farmer, was born in 1836 in the French Drôme department. Mostly known as "Postman Cheval", he dedicated no less than three decades of his life to the building of his palace from the ground up. Far from being stopped by his lack of education, he was much inspired by the postcards and journals that appeared at the time, as well as the gorgeous yellow stones of the Drôme.
In 1969, the monument was listed as Historic Monument by André Malraux, a French novelist and intellectual who recognized Cheval's palace as a masterpiece of naive art architecture.
