The invitation to Mom's retirement party arrived on embossed cardstock, the kind that screamed "we have money and want you to know it." Forty years at Whitmore & Associates Law Firm, retiring as a senior partner. The party would be at the Riverside Country Club, black tie required, 7 PM sharp.
At the bottom, in Mom's handwriting: "Victoria, please dress appropriately. First impressions matter, even if you're between jobs again."
I set the invitation on my desk—the mahogany executive desk in my corner office on the forty-second floor of the Reynolds Building downtown. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city sprawled out beneath me, including the Riverside Country Club about six miles south.
