Shaving To Waxing

Thinking about shaving before your waxing appointment? As long as it was a couple of days ago and you can see the hair growing back in, everything should be fine… right?
Wrong!
Waxing removes hair from the root. Unlike shaving which will only cut the hair at the surface of the skin, waxing will actually pull and remove the entire hair out of the follicle. This is why your skin feels so much smoother after waxing compared to shaving (where if you get cold soon after you shave, you can already feel the hairs growing back in).
In order for the wax to be able to pull the hair from the root, the hair needs to be long enough. This means you need to have at least 1/4th an inch of hair growth, which takes about 3-4 weeks for your body to produce/grow. If the hair is too short, the wax won’t be able to grip the hair and pull it from the root. That will result in the wax breaking the hair at the surface (just like shaving). Not cool!
I can’t even explain how many times in my career while working at European Wax Center that I had to turn customers away because they had shaved too recently, thus resulting in them not being able to get waxed. Why did this happen so many times while I worked at EWC? I learned that the front desk receptionists don’t ask the customers when the last time they shaved or did any kind of maintenance was. I should have realized this because I used to work at the front desk back at European Wax Center when I was in Esthetics school and was never taught how important of a question that was. So many customers have no idea that their hair has to be a certain length in order for it to be able to be waxed. Once I started my own waxing business, I made sure to always ask new customers how long it had been since they had either shaved or trimmed their hair. Magically, I never had an issue with turning customers away anymore (unless the customer lied, of course).
Is it ok to shave between waxing appointments? No! Shaving in between your wax appointments will mess up your hair growth cycle since you will have to wait longer for your next wax appointment. I’ve noticed that customers who shave in between have a much harder time sticking to a schedule which causes your waxes to hurt more since you’re not getting waxed as often. It will also cause your hair to start growing back in thicker because you’re not getting waxed as consistently as if you came in every 3-6 weeks.
So if you’re thinking about waxing, put away the razor! You’ll thank yourself later.
