The owner of 81 Stoke Newington Church Street, a Grade II* listed Georgian house from the 1730s, very kindly invited me to have a look and gave me a tour. The house, which is undergoing careful renovation, is one I’ve walked past many times over the years. It was interesting to see the surviving features, especially the wooden panelling and staircases.
Originally numbered 1 High Houses, the property is part of a terrace of four houses, now Nos. 81–87 Stoke Newington Church Street, built between 1733 and 1735 by Henry Cole. The archway between the houses originally led to West End Yard, which served as a depot for horse buses.
