The mission: to travel to The Gambia and record TV interviews for an upcoming documentary. But travel with very limited size of kit; 10 kilos to be precise. To melt in with the tourists, of whom rarely stray off the beaten track we wanted to travel.
They call The Gambia the Smiling Coast and whilst it has the inevitable five star walled retreats where you may spend an all inclusive two weeks without ever sampling anything particularly local or real, step outside the manicured resorts and you'll find something really rather special.
Part of Africa's smallest country is noisy, polluted, messy, disorganised and still suffers from years of cruel neglect following dictatorial rule that offered a human rights record that was far from credible. A leader that land stole, destroyed lives, tortured and suggested he could cure AIDS.
It's little wonder that trust levels are still a little tested.
The Gambia decided to change and the change feels very promising.
The people of this country are survivors, wonderfully hospitable and positive about their futures collectively.
This is The Gambia and I recommend you travel there.
