David Steinmeyer did some amazing things in the studio to be sure, BUT and this is a BIG BUT, there is no other "LIVE" performance out there that equals or bests this performance here.

Why do I have this recording?
I played a joint concert with Dave and the Airmen of Note.
I sat right in the front row in Clement Auditorium when Dave played this.
I had never heard of Dave Steinmeyer and when he pointed his bell right across my head, I almost fell out of my seat.
YOU HAVEN'T LIVED UNTIL YOU HAVE HEARD DAVE STEINMEYER PLAY LIVE.
I have heard Watrous, Fontana, and many others LIVE, but Dave's tone, control and soaring abilities in the upper register of the trombone could not be equaled.
Could Watrous play as high?
You bet, but...Watrous never soared up there nor had Dave's sound.
Watrous high notes were punchy and short-lived for the most part.
Not near as graceful as Dave's playing.
I don't think Bill could have pulled off this solo without resorting to bebopping his way out of it and THAT my friends is the difference!

Who am i to judge?
Let's just say I know a few things about the upper register of EVERY BRASS INSTRUMENT and have been up front, on stage with nothing between the bell of my horn and the audience!

I was featured on Gabriel which was later sent to both Maynard Ferguson and The Navy Commodores.
I made the final cut for the Commodores. Scored 95 on the ASVAB, but....FAILED the D.O.D. physical due to my eye sight.
Someone on behalf of Maynard Ferguson contacted me and told me Maynard really liked my playing.
Said to meet at NORTH TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY before they went on tour.
I never made it due to a serious, personal, family situation.
