One of the critical aspects of the timber grading process is accurately measuring the size of the knots. The presentation will demonstrate how the displacement method is applied to knots in a variety of configurations and the corresponding knot size equations are developed.
Long-time Guild and Timber Frame Engineering Council (TFEC) member Dick Schmidt is currently with Fire Tower Engineered Timber, where he engineers timber frame structures and related systems. Prior to joining Fire Tower, he served for many years as a faculty member at the University of Wyoming, where he taught engineering and conducted research. The research conducted by Dick and his students on timber frame joinery formed the basis of the Guild’s design standard TFEC-1, Standard for Design of Timber Frame Structures and Commentary. Besides being a Guild member, he is a member of the American Wood Council and the American Society of Civil Engineers and has served as a Guild Director (2002-2004) and as chair of the TFEC.
