They said this trail broke wagons — and after riding it, I can see why. But that didn’t stop me from saddling up my mammoth donkeys and heading across Donner Summit, where history, hardship, and legend all collide.
We set out near Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe, following the same steep, rocky paths that tested pioneers and became infamous for the Donner Party tragedy. But that’s not the whole story — this mountain held another battle, one carved into granite by hand when crews built the transcontinental railroad through some of the toughest terrain in America.
Along the way, we find remnants of that era — stone tunnels, rusted relics, and trails that tell their own story if you know where to look. The donkeys handled it better than some wagons ever did... but not everything went as planned.
