Presentation at the Town of Cedarburg, Wisconsin Town Hall.
The inaugural talk in the History Speaker Series, created by the Landmarks Commission to celebrate the Town’s 175th anniversary, featured interesting and inspiring stories from the past, told by friends and neighbors who made a difference to the Town. The true story of how Hamilton’s unique buildings were “saved” by determined Town residents, along with a hardworking Commission and Town Board, may have been forgotten over the past 50 years, but it was a tale worth re-telling.
Ruth was one of the original members of the Town Landmarks Commission who wrote the successful proposal submitted to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1974. She also created original artwork and presented the documents to the State Historic Preservation Board on behalf of the Town. The Hamilton District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The event brought together young and old to hear Ruth’s story and celebrate the “lucky break” that kept Hamilton’s treasured landmarks in place for future generations to appreciate.
