I’ve had a love-hate relationship with the Sony 100-400 GM. It’s a sharp, well-built lens—but it’s incredibly niche. Ideal for bright daylight shooting, wildlife photography, and some sports—but only when lighting is perfect. For low-light sports, indoor action, or overcast conditions, this lens just doesn’t cut it.
I originally bought the 100-400 thinking it would be the perfect sports photography lens—and it can be, as long as it’s sunny. It struggles with fast shutter speeds in low light and lacks the versatility a 100-300mm f/2.8 GM would offer (Sony, please make one!).
Also, I’m still new to video, so yes—I know the rolling shutter shadows are there. I’m learning, I promise 😅
Gear used:
– Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS
– Sony A1, Sony A9
– Natural light (midday)
