Dà Òran le Beathag Mhòr (Two Songs by Big Rebecca)
I recently learned about the songs of Beathag Mhòr (Big Rebecca), a tragic Gàidhlig poetess and songwriter who lived in the 17th or 18th centuries (the dates are unclear).
Here's two of her songs, based on the singing of Annie Arnott and Wilma Dixon.
An Cùl Bachalach (The Curly Hair)
This is a love song to her (ultimately unfaithful) lover Màrtainn a Bhealaich
Beathag Mhòr nan Dreasaichean (Great Rebecca of the Dresses)
Beathag was persecuted for her relationship with Màrtainn. After having Màrtainn's first child, his father cruelly whipped her.
She wrote about the event in this lullaby, addressed to the child. It's an incredibly up-beat song for the tragic subject matter.
