The drive to Sonamarg is excellent along the Nallah Sindh, the largest tributary of the Jehlum River in the valley of Kashmir. The drive is around 90 kms from srinagar through the valley and open grassy meadow land after travelling around 30 kms from srinagar through Ganderbal, you can find the snow capped mountains:) its worth spending a day in your Trip to Kashmir for Sonamarg.. once you reach there you have two options to travel to the Thajwas glacier, have to take a horse ride or a local Vehicle which takes u till half distance (again may need to walk for 3 kms or take horse) my advice prefer for horse ride enjoying the landscape, they charge rs 500 for 2 way(8 km up-down) +waiting charges of rs 300/hr per horse. if you are a group of more than four, you can negotiate upto rs 500-600 for the whole(2way+waiting charges), people will try to loot you becarefull.
