This is a video of my turn-of-the-century home decorated for Christmas, 2014. The large tree in the front parlor is decorated with small lights from the 1990's and large bulb lights that first became available in about 1928. The tinsel icicles were popular in the 1940's and is how my mom and grandma used to decorate their trees.
The fireplace is burning coal and keeps the front part of the house nice and toasty. My old 15 year old Schnauzer, Tillie loves it!
The colored candles on the mantel are commonly referred to as Christmas Fairy Lights and were around since the 1880's. They could be suspended on the branches of a Christmas tree and were lit by small wicks floating on top of common kitchen oils. I have a vintage set of 1920's lights as the light source for mine.
The small table top tree in the back parlor is lit exclusively with Edison pear shaped carbon filament bulbs from the first decade of the 20th century. This is my pride and joy of Christmas decorations because of the age and scarcity of the bulbs.
Back in the front hall is my feather tree decorated with candles. It sits on a German-made musical, rotating base from the 1880's/'90's.
The back ground music is "Silent Night" by Franz Gruber and is performed by the Metropolitan Quartet and played on a vintage, 1916 Edison Diamond Disc Player.
Hope you enjoy the tour of my early 1900's home.
Merry Christmas!
