How to make a 2-colour Monotype using a simple art room hack, by Rob the Art Teacher

‘How to make a 2-colour Monotype (Monoprint)’ is for those wanting a first taste of printmaking, for teachers whose students are beginners, and for hobbyists.

Follow my simple steps and explanations to learn how to make your first monotype or use my video with your young art students in the art classroom.

Of all the forms of printmaking, monotypes are perhaps closest to the character and spontaneity of drawing than any other.

Monotypes are a great beginner’s activity because making these unique (one-off) prints can generate lots of excitement and ideas for future prints, and my students love the process because it is so tactile, and it has that special ‘wow’ moment as each student pulls their print off the ink.

Teacher Notes:

This is a great unit for teaching elements such as composition, image reversal, and the basic principles of printmaking, and it is rich in playful discovery opportunities. The activities are suitable for children aged 10 years and upwards as a beginners’ printmaking experience; and I teach the unit in a single 90-minute lesson, with follow-up development in following lessons.

Rob Garrett is an accomplished art teacher, writer, and contemporary art curator.
