STORYLINE:

Chinese President Jiang Zemin met his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Khatami, on Saturday during a visit to improve Sino-Iranian relations.

Jiang is the first Chinese president to visit Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

He arrived in Tehran on Friday night after touring the two and a half thousand-year-old ruins of Persepolis, the capital of ancient Persia about 850 kilometers (510 miles) south of Tehran.

On Saturday, he was welcomed by Khatami at the Sa'adabad Palace in northern Tehran.

The leaders' talks were expected to cover joint projects in energy, trade and economy, the reconstruction and security in Afghanistan and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Jiang's visit comes at a time both countries are concerned with growing US influence in the region and the plight of the Palestinians.

Both China and Iran have expressed concern about growing US influence in central Asia following the attacks in Afghanistan.

Jiang, heading a delegation of 180 government and business officials, is finishing a five-nation trip that has taken him to Libya, Nigeria, Germany and Tunisia.

Trade exchange between Iran and China stands at three point three (B) billion US dollars, according to government officials.
