How to use a Peening Machine for Continental Scythes

The Austrian made 'Schweiger Fulpmes' peening machine is a brilliantly designed, highly effective, and fast tool for peening continental style Scythe blades.

During the last few years I have learnt the nuances of how to use it, including the adjustments that allow it to be so good at what it does. I want to share these tips and techniques with you to inform you of the advantages and disadvantages so that you can make an informed decision if you want to invest in one. These machines are very uncommon in the UK currently, as the traditional form of Scything here doesn't involve peening. Please don't use this with an English style blade! Talking to fellow scythers and scything teachers recently, there is an increasing interest in importing these due to the major advantages, namely, significantly reduced strain on the body, speed and cleanliness of peen. Another potential advantage we are looking at is the ease of use - for those who peen irregularly it can be difficult to do consistently with the standard jig and anvil methods. Despite the costs, it may be a huge help to a significant cross section of people who practice scything, as peening is critical to ones ability to mow easefully and effectively. Having one of these machines (or having access to one) may make the difference between a scythe that works brilliantly, and one that is exhausting and a struggle to mow with.
