The bartender doesn't ask what I'm drinking anymore. Same synthetic bourbon, same seat by the viewport where Earth used to be visible three jumps ago.
"Signal came through today," she says, wiping down glasses that never really get dirty in recycled air. "Your sister's wedding. Happened fourteen months ago."
I stare into my drink. The ice cubes are perfect spheres here—no gravity to flatten them into the irregular shapes I remember from home. Even the physics of melting has become foreign.
"She wore Mom's dress," the bartender continues, reading from her datapad. "Said she wished you were there to walk her down the aisle."
I may not have been there in physical form, but every step she took, I was with her. In the nether spaces between here and home, in the place where love travels faster than light.
But now, staring at these perfect spheres of ice, I can only visit her in sleep. I dream in yesterday, because that's the only realm in which we're together.
