The German POW grandmothers were too weak to walk. Left behind in the chaos of war, many believed this was where they would die.
But when U.S. soldiers discovered them—cold, starving, and barely conscious—they refused to leave them behind. One by one, the soldiers lifted the elderly women onto their backs and carried them nearly 12 miles through mud, snow, and ruins to reach medical care.
