Bach Cello Suite No 1 Prelude, as original as possible, modern bow, standard A - Georg Mertens cello

In Bach's time string players used a Baroque bow.
Using the Baroque bowing for our bow today can get very noisy and edgy, what was certainly not Bach's intention - and it doesn't sound edgy played with the Baroque bow.
I recorded the Prelude using an modified bow hold to our usual bow hold - the hand more inwards - and I use the Baroque bowings. It sounds very similar to the Baroque bow.
3 out of 5 earliest sources show the bowing starting 4 slurred / 4 detached, the likely original version: the earliest copy by Kellner, manuscript D plus the first print by Norblin (Cotelle & Probst).
I decided to choose this bowing.

At the age of 11 this Prelude was the first piece I ever transcribed, from my fathers viola edition! For my next birthday I had been given a LP of Cello Suite No 5 with Enrico Mainardi and was very excited about the suites. For my next birthday I received Mainardi's edition of the Cello Suites. A decade later I received a scholarship to a masterclass with Enrico Mainardi in 1973.
