Only A Northern Song was written by George as a pun to Liverpool and Northern Songs, the company which managed The Beatles' rights to their compositions. Every Beatles song at this point was owned by Northern Songs, with John and Paul having 15% shares each, and a ridiculous 1.6% share each to George and Ringo.

"I realized Dick James had conned me out of the copyrights for my own songs by offering to become my publisher. As an 18 or 19-year-old kid, I thought : "Great, somebody’s gonna publish my songs!" But he never said, ‘And incidentally, when you sign this document here, you’re assigning me the ownership of the songs,’ which is what it is. It was just a blatant theft. By the time I realized what had happened, when they were going public and making all this money out of this catalog, I wrote Only A Northern Song as what we call a ‘piss-take,’ just to have a joke about it."

The song was recorded in the middle of the Sgt. Pepper sessions, in early February 1967 and finishing in April 1967. On February 13th, the band first started work on a mono mix of A Day In The Life, and then started working on George's song. 9 takes of the backing track were made, featuring George on organ, Paul on bass and Ringo on drums. Take 3 was deemed the best and chosen for further overdubs. John didn't take part in the basic track, as he felt the song wasn't good enough for inclusion on Pepper. George Martin recalls the awkward session :

"The other Beatles were clearly underwhelmed too. John was so uninspired, in fact, that he decided not to participate in the backing track at all. Still, Paul, Ringo, and George ambled through quite a few takes...it took a long time because nobody could really get into it, not even George himself. I think he was actually a bit embarrassed about the song...None of the takes they did that night were particularly good."

On the next day, George added his lead vocals, but then, the song was shelved and nothing was added until April 1967, where the band chose it for inclusion in the Yellow Submarine movie. Paul rerecorded his bass track, George redid his vocals and the band added various sound effects, keyboards (notably piano, mellotron and an eclectic glockenspiel part by John). The track was only mixed in mono for the time being since it wasn't due for release on a studio album, until 1999 where it was finally given a proper stereo release on the Yellow Submarine Songtrack.
