YAlthough classified by the AKC as working dogs, Great Danes are now primarily seen as companion dogs, but have also seen use as physical assistance dogs more recently.
German Shepherds on the other hand, are known to be able to do almost anything from police work and agility, to therapy and scaling walls.
A German Shepherd Great Dane mix is a large designer dog that combines a sweet and friendly demeanor, with a large and protective spirit.
Also known as Great Shepherds and Dane Shepherds, many dog owners love their attractive yet unique appearance, size, and suitability as well-rounded family companions.
While German Shepherds evolved from a small pool of herding dogs in Germany in the late 1890s, interestingly enough, Great Danes were also developed by Germans in the late 1800s.
Their roots stretch back much further, however, appearing in Ancient Egyptian art as far back as 4000 B.C.
GSD Great Dane mixes are typically quite tall, standing 28 to 30 inches at the shoulders. However, their weight can vary greatly. They can be a lean 65 pounds, or massive like a Great Dane at up to 130 pounds.
In terms of appearance, these dogs will take on some combination of traits from the two parent dogs.
German Shepherds are typically black and tan, with slightly domed heads, large erect ears, and strong hindquarters, whereas Great Danes are tall, with long and deep muzzles with a slightly furrowed brow and medium drop ears.
GSD Great Danes commonly have colors like fawn, merle, black, and black and white. They also tend to be leggy, have faces that are more triangular, and their muzzles will be narrower than a Great Dane's.
Dane Shepherds should be calm and steadfast companions, confident and friendly to strangers, and can be prone to being territorial and protective.
Hybrid dogs typically live longer than the purebred parent breeds, but unfortunately that’s not the case with Great Shepherds, as they’ll only live for about 7 to 10 years.
In terms of genetic health issues that these dogs can be prone to, the most notable is bloat, although they’ll be susceptible to others like EPI, diabetes, cancer, and hip dysplasia.
These mixed dogs usually enjoy small kids but they can be a little rambunctious, so caution is definitely necessary when they’re around little kids.
If your Shepherd Dane puppy inherits more of the Great Dane personality, they’ll be friendly and playful around other dogs, whereas those more like Shepherds will need lots of socialization from a young age.
Qualities from both parent dogs suggest the Great Shepherd will need consistent training as well as firmness and clear leadership.
In terms of exercise requirements, these dogs should get at least an hour of daily exercise to help curb unwanted behaviors from taking over.
These dogs often have short coats, but may also have undercoats, and will probably be denser than a purebred Dane's.
