3 hour Time lapse of a Cigar BoxBuild: Starting with tool overview.
Start by measuring and cutting the maple neck and notching for the headstock and box lid. Using a fret spacing template I cut the fret slots using my "jig" table saw. Next I pre drill the holes for the "nail head" inlay position markers. The heal is cut, glued and clamped. While the heal glue is drying I take opportunity to file and shape the neck using files, sander, cylinder sander and sandpaper. After the neck is shaped install the frets. i use a soldering iron to burn in the position markers on the top side of the neck. Next I attach the neck to the box. First notch the box using handsaw, drill and files. I usually add internal bracing by cutting blocks and glueing them to the four corners. These provide support for the Cigar Box Lid help balance the weight and feel of the instrument. I also add mounting blocks under where the neck attaches to connect the neck securely to the box. This build features two sound holes, a hinge/bolt combo bridge and internal reverb springs. This guitar neck is covered with Boiled Linseed Oil. I use regular screws to connect the neck and the box to the mounting blocks. Standard quarter inch input jack is installed. A Disc piezo pickup is wired straight to the input jack and hot glued directly to the underside of the box top. The tuners are then carefully positioned, marked, measured and installed. I use a small triangle file to cut groove slots in the "jumbo zero fret". This (along withe the eyelets and bolt) help hold the strings in place. The saddle is just the threaded section from a large bolt. I cut it down to size with a grinder. (beware of sparks!!) This guitar is strung with acoustic strings A D G but tuned G D G. The "hook" on the top is so you can hang the instrument from a nail in the wall.
