The initial Japanese landings at Aparri, Vigan, and Legaspi on Luzon and later at Davao in Mindanao, although correctly assessed by Generals MacArthur and Wainwright as secondary attacks aimed at acquiring airfields and not the main invasion, had achieved astonishing success since the Japanese had established a firm foothold on the Philippines and control over airfields which would soon become operational bases for fighter planes of the 5th Air Group.
