In many parts of the world, including where I practice, dentistry is 100% out-of-pocket and not supported by insurance or government funding. Dentists working in private practice must often make difficult decisions: choosing the best biomaterials and investing in gold-standard care — which comes at great cost both financially and in terms of chair time — all while facing pressure from patients to “keep it cheap” and from the market to “move faster.” These tensions can compromise clinical integrity and long-term outcomes.
This session would explore how we communicate complexity and value to patients who don’t always understand the true cost of doing things right. It’s about how we build trust, convey the importance of premium biomaterials, and stand by ethical decisions — even in highly competitive markets or lower-income economies.
We often see beautiful cases on lecture slides, but many of those are created in educational settings, clinical studies, or situations where patients don’t pay for treatment. In the real world, in a private setting where no one is watching, doing the right thing is far more difficult — and much more expensive. Yet I’ve chosen to follow that path my entire career, and I believe this is an important and under-discussed topic for our community.
