Join us for our favorite Polish food as we eat Pierogi in the form of a taste test (both savory and sweet) in Krakow, Poland. We found a restaurant called Pierogarnia - Słowiańska Uczta on our first full day in Krakow after shopping for some groceries just across the street. We ended up eating there on a whim and what a pleasant surprise it was. The pierogi served at this restaurant are some of the best we've ever had and we ended up going back several times.

All in all we tried 40 different pierogi for this video including savory and dessert options. It was a feast of feasts.

🥟 First Full Day in Krakow: Pierogi Dreams & River Crossings
We kicked off our first full day in Krakow, Poland, with a single goal in mind: pierogi. Determined and hungry, we were so committed to sampling this national treasure that we even crossed the river just to track down a restaurant that specializes in pierogies—a place we’d spotted by chance the night before. The massive menu on display outside promised an epic feast, and our anticipation grew as we ordered four different types: two savory and two sweet, totaling a whopping 40 pierogies (20 each!). The ultimate taste test was about to begin.

🍹 Drinks to Pair: Traditional Polish Compote
Before the feast arrived, we decided to try something other than beer, opting instead for compote, a classic Polish fruit drink. Served cold with slices of green apple, strawberries, and other berries floating at the bottom, compote tasted like a refreshing, lightly watered-down natural fruit juice—perfect for washing down salty, savory dumplings and for cooling off on a warm summer’s day in Krakow.

🥔 The Savory Pierogi: Traditional Ruskie & Gourmet Mushroom-Walnut
Our first plates to arrive were the savory pierogies. The classic “Ruskie” came stuffed with creamy mashed potatoes and cheese, topped with caramelized onions—rich, hearty, and full of peppery flavor. The filling was generous, smooth, and garlicky, making every bite a comfort-food classic that reminded us of cold Canadian winters, where store-bought frozen pierogi were our staple (but never this good).

Next came the mushroom, feta, and walnut pierogies. These were bursting with earthy, fresh mushroom flavor, perfectly complemented by the tang of feta and the crunch of walnuts. Caramelized onions again provided that sweet-salty balance. The difference between canned and fresh mushrooms was night and day—these dumplings felt gourmet, elevating the humble pierogi to new heights.

😲 The Pierogi Challenge: Can We Finish 40?
With 20 savory dumplings down, we found ourselves full but still eager for more. The pierogies were so well-made—plump, stuffed to the brim, and surprisingly light—that we polished off each plate, laughing about our self-imposed “gluttony Olympics.” This was easily the best pierogi we’d ever eaten, and we couldn’t imagine stopping now.

🍫 The Sweet Pierogi: Chocolate Banana & Seasonal Strawberry
As the dessert plates arrived, we braced ourselves for round two: chocolate-banana pierogi and strawberry pierogi. Served cold and with a creamy milk custard dipping sauce, the chocolate banana pierogies tasted just like the sweet banana pancakes we’d loved in Thailand—rich, decadent, and filled with gooey banana. The custard sauce reminded us of rice pudding, adding a silky finish to each bite.

The strawberry pierogi stole the show with their bright, tart, and juicy filling—each bite packed with real summer fruit flavor (not the over-sweetened jam you sometimes get elsewhere). Dipped in custard, they were perfectly balanced and so refreshing after all those savory dumplings.

We debated our favorites: the strawberry won for its fruity, tart taste that fit our mood, but on another day the chocolate would have been the top pick. Both were a revelation and proved that dessert pierogi deserve a place on every food lover’s bucket list.

💶 Price, Value & Portion Size: Krakow’s Best Food Deal?
The grand total for this epic pierogi feast—40 dumplings and two drinks—was just 56 Zloty (about 13 Euros). The value was unbeatable, especially given the freshness, variety, and portion size. We left convinced that this is one of the best ways to experience Polish cuisine in Krakow, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime fan.

😅 Aftermath: Pierogi-Induced Siesta Required
Stuffed, happy, and a little overwhelmed, we laughed about our “gold medal” achievement in eating 40 pierogies in a single sitting. (Was it a world record? We’ll never know!)
