We all know that Lord Vishnu married Goddess Lakshmi. Do you want to know the story of how they married?
The story of their marriage starts with Indra – the Lord of the Devas.
Lakshmi was one of the Ratnas that emerged during the Samudra Manthan, a task jointly performed by the Asuras and the Devas. Read on to know what happened after she appeared and why Vishnu did not help her.
The Samudra Manthan (also known as Kshirasagara Manthana) or the churning of the ocean is one of the most significant events associated with the Vishnu Puran. It was during this Manthan that Lord Vishnu took his second avatar, Kurma Avatar. He appeared in the form of a tortoise and held the Mandara Parvat on his back. Thus, he helped the Devas and the Asuras during the endeavour to extract the nectar (Amrit) of immortality. However, Amrit was not the only Ratna that emerged from the seabed. There were thirteen other Ratnas, and one was Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth.

What happened after Lakshmi appeared from the seabed during the Samudra Manthan?

Soon after seeing Lakshmi, the Asura King Kalketu wanted her to join his camp. He was in awe of her beauty and wanted to marry her. But the Devas headed by Indra objected to his demand and insisted that she must be a part of their camp since she looked angelic. Subsequently, both the Devas and the Asuras got into a heated debate. And after seeing them fighting over her, Lakshmi appealed to Vishnu to save her. Vishnu appeared but refused to find a solution to her problem by stating that he cannot interfere in something which is happening as per Brahma's command. Therefore, Lakshmi rushed to Brahma for help and urged him to intervene.

Why did Lord Vishnu refuse to help Lakshmi?

Lord Vishnu, who knew what would unfold, purposely decided not to help Lakshmi. He wanted to surprise her and also fulfil the promise he made to her before taking the Kurma Avatar. When Lakshmi expressed her displeasure over separation (caused due to Vishnu's frequent visit to the earth) that she had to experience because of the absence of Vishnu, the latter promised that the reunion will be sweeter than her expectation. Therefore, to see Lakshmi beam with joy, Lord Vishnu pretended as if he wouldn't be able to help her.

What happened after Brahma stepped in to restore peace between the Asuras and the Devas during the Samudra Manthan?

After appearing before the Asuras and the Devas, Lord Brahma said that none could deny a woman her right to refuse a proposal. Moreover, he asked the Asuras not to illtreat a woman. He explained to them that women are not inanimate objects. He also asked them to extend courtesy while talking to women. Therefore, to sort out the matter, Brahma introduced the concept of Swayamvar, that gave women the right to choose their life partner. Thus, after knowing about it, Lakshmi breathed a sigh of relief. For the unversed, neither the Devas nor the Asuras knew who Lakshmi was. They were oblivious of the truth that she is Vishnu's consort.
Goddess Lakshmi saw all the assembled Devas, Asuras and Gods. She studied Dark God Vishnu with his beautiful twinkling eyes and mischievous smile.
She smiled once and garlanded Lord Vishnu, choosing him above all the others.
The Gods cheered when they saw Goddess Lakshmi marry Lord Vishnu. She was the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity and he was the Preserving God. They all sensed that she was the Goddess Supreme, who had manifested herself as Lakshmi.
