St Patrick's Parish Church Drumbeg with its wonderful sandstone and wooden lychgate is a local landmark known for miles around. You have probably driven past it many times. I love old churches and especially the hidden history that often is waiting to be 'found' in their buildings and graveyards. This church is wonderful.
HISTORY
The following brief history is taken from “Recollections of The Parish of Drumbeg” Diocese of Down, by Matthew Neill:
ttThe earliest record, we know of, refers to the “Church of the Drum” being rated at one mark for a tithe of sixteen pence in the taxation of Down in 1306. However, as the Church is dedicated to St. Patrick and is situated on an ancient ford of the river Lagan, a much earlier date can be inferred for the first Church of Drumbeg. The lower part of the tower is part of the original Church built on the present site in 1798. The wooden spire of that Church was-blown down in the big wind in 1831. Rebuilt in stone in 1833 it was incorporated into the design of the present Church, rebuilt in 1870 and erected to the-cruciform design of Thomas Drew F.R.I.A. at a cost of about £2,500. In 1878 the members of the Montgomery family erected the Lych gate, which is such a beautiful feature of Drumbeg. The Yew trees were presented by Thomas Montgomery of Ballydrain in 1885.
