Het monumentale station Delft uit 1885 heeft talrijke versieringen. Het is nu in gebruik als restaurant, want inmiddels is het station vervangen door een gloednieuw exemplaar.

Het nieuwe station van Delft, naar een ontwerp van Mecanoo Architecten, is in gebruik genomen. Mecanoo heeft vanaf het begin het idee gehad om een stationshal te ontwerpen die de bezoekers meteen duidelijk maakt dat ze zich in Delft bevinden. Het station gecombineerd met stadshal en stadskantoor staat bovenop de spoortunnel die in plaats is gekomen van het oude betonnen spoorviaduct dat sinds 1965 Delft in twee stukken deelde. Kom je via de roltrappen naar boven dan zie je als eerste het indrukwekkende plafond met de historische plattegrond van Delft. Kijk je naar buiten, dan zie je de stad en het oude station, als een modern ‘Gezicht op Delft’ van de schilder Johannes Vermeer.

De glazen huid van het gebouw weerspiegelt de Hollandse wolkenluchten. De panelen van gesmolten glas met lensachtige bollen verwijzen naar het gegoten glas dat in vele oude panden in Delft te vinden is. De combinatie en het ritme van open panelen van high performance glas en gesloten panelen met gesmolten glas dragen bij aan het energiezuinig klimaatconcept en zorgen voor een hoge mate van duurzaamheid.

Eindeloos schaven aan de vorm heeft geresulteerd in een gebouw dat alzijdig en compact is. De verlaagde daklijnen op de hoeken zorgen voor een geleidelijke overgang naar de bestaande kleinschalige bebouwing van de Delftse binnenstad en het aangrenzende Westerkwartier. Insnijdingen in de glazen massa van het stadskantoor vormen een patroon van stegen en binnenplaatsen, geïnspireerd op de fijnmazige structuur van de binnenstad van Delft.

Delft's monumental 1885 station has numerous decorations. It is now in use as a restaurant, as the station has since been replaced by a brand new one.

Delft's new station, to a design by Mecanoo Architects, has been inaugurated. Mecanoo's idea from the beginning was to design a station hall that would immediately make it clear to visitors that they are in Delft. The station combined with city hall and city office stands atop the railroad tunnel that replaced the old concrete railroad viaduct that has divided Delft in two since 1965. If you come up the escalators, the first thing you see is the impressive ceiling with the historic map of Delft. If you look outside, you see the city and the old station, like a modern “View of Delft” by painter Johannes Vermeer.

The glass skin of the building reflects the Dutch cloudscapes. The panels of molten glass with lens-like spheres refer to the cast glass found in many old buildings in Delft. The combination and rhythm of open panels of high performance glass and closed panels of molten glass contribute to the energy-efficient climate concept and provide a high degree of sustainability.

Endless planing of the form has resulted in a building that is all-sided and compact. The lowered roof lines at the corners provide a gradual transition to the existing small-scale buildings of the Delft city center and the adjacent Westerkwartier. Incisions in the glass mass of the city office form a pattern of alleys and courtyards, inspired by the finely woven structure of Delft's inner city.
