I want to throw out a disclaimer that I'm not saying don't use diffusion filters because they can certainly have their place and purpose in filmmaking, but I am saying be more intentional on when and why you should use them in your projects. It's important to understand that while diffusion filters can add a certain aesthetic to your footage, knowing how and when to apply them can really enhance your overall production quality. I'm trying to get more intentional on every tool I use in my filmmaking career, and through experience, what I've learned is that the better you get at lighting and learning how to soften that light, the less you really need to rely on diffusion. Also, part of becoming a skilled filmmaker involves learning how diffusion filters can alter your image in both positive and negative ways, which is crucial for making informed decisions. Learning how to shape light effectively and understanding all the components of cinematography and how they work together is what truly makes your image cinematic, not just the FILTER!

So here's 3 reasons why just throwing any kind of diffusion filter over your lens can hinder your cinematic images and potentially detract from the vision you have for your film. I know every content creator says they use them, and I do as well, but I'm also very aware of the reasons behind my choices and what it does to my overall image, as well as when to use them and when not to use them to achieve the best results.
