What does Santa look like in your imagination? Have you ever wondered why Santa Claus has to be white? If Santa were Asian, would you still like him? With these questions in mind, Plus One interviews Al Young from Seattle, the “coolest Asian Santa Claus in America”. As the descendant of a Chinese railway worker who came to the US more than a hundred years ago, Young was the first Asian American world champion drag racer. After retirement, Young made headlines for being one of the first Asian Santa Clauses in America! Let’s follow Dayday to find out how Young thought about the American classic Santa Claus and how he tried to diversify that image. Sadly, Al Young passed away just a few days ago due to heart issues. Let us remember the joy and contribution he brought to not just the Asian community, but the whole country!
